The Havering Learning Support Service is seeking to appoint an advisory teacher to work with pupils with speech and language difficulties in schools and settings. This exciting new post has been created through the development of an integrated service with the Speech and Language Therapy Team and will involve working alongside the existing lead advisory teacher for speech and language. The post offers the opportunity for joint working to develop effective interventions to meet the needs of children and young people.

The appointee must have experience in working with pupils with speech and language difficulties, the organisation and planning for support staff and the implementation of a range of programmes, strategies and resources. They must have a positive “can do” attitude and commitment to enabling children and young people to participate fully in all aspects of mainstream school life.

Preparing and delivering INSET is a key component of the post and the appointee needs to be creative and flexible. The appointee will work closely with a team of specialist assistants who model and run language groups in schools and have assisted in preparing levelling assessments for pupils. The applicant needs to continue to develop this work and mentor the assistants.

The appointee will have opportunities to continue to develop their own understanding of speech and language difficulties to inform the work of the service and enable school staff to work effectively with children and young people.

Applicants must be able to work independently, planning their own diary and liaising with colleagues and schools to create positive working relationships. They must demonstrate a commitment to providing a high quality service, in collaboration with speech and language therapists, to enable children and young people to develop skills and reach their potential educationally and socially.

For an informal discussion please contact Liz Dunnett, the Lead Advisory Teacher for Speech and Language on 01708 433936 or by email
